This is my second year in homeschool and my parents promised me that this time we will be active in joining events like workshops and exhibits. My favorite subjects are Science and Art, so my parents were on the look out for activities on those 2 subjects.
Here is my Laser Projection Microscope, made out of Lego blocks, a laser pointer and syringe. My entry to the Homeschoolers Conquer Science event held last month at the Bayanihan Center last August 13. Here is how I made it: I had to make 2 structures out of Lego blocks, one to hold the laser pointer and one for the syringe. The trick is to align the laser pointer and the syringe so that the light would hit a droplet of liquid hanging from the tip of the syringe (NOTE: The needle of the syringe has been removed). I used the square frame to hold the red cartolina. The cartolina is there because the light has to hit a surface to show the bacteria (If we took it off, the light would get very big and would hit the wall!). The color of the paper is red so that the laser won't hurt anybody's eyes.
It was kind of busy that day because, well, everyone (even two of the judges.) came up to see how dirty, or clean, their hands were. By doing so, they answered Professor Lego's question (pictured above).( OK, If you can't read it, he says: How clean are your HANDS?) Turns out, people who touched something with starch on it, specifically a starch experiment, had the most bacteria, Talk about disgusting! Well, anyway, as I said earlier, lots of people saw how dirty their hands were and, as you can see in the picture above, my table is full of cups where people dipped their hands so that I could take some of the water to see the bacteria in their hands. It was a fun experiment to do.
My experiment got me in first place! These are my prizes: a Virtual Reality/VR Box and a Smartphone Science Microscope Kit. The sunglasses are NOT one of the prizes, they're a kind of thing with prices on it. The thing about the experiment was that it was interactive and original. We really wanted the project to be fun 4 everyone, and I mean, EVERYONE.
